George Osborne’s cat Freya was chauffeur-driven back to her Downing Street home after being found more than a mile away, mewing for help near one of London’s busiest junctions.

The three women who found Freya were passing a building site next the Vauxhall roundabout in south London at 11pm when they heard a desperate mewing and looked up to see the tabby cat perched on barriers surrounding the site.

The cat followed the group before jumping down to the pavement and allowing herself to be caught.

The three girls immediately rang the phone number on the cat’s collar and were astounded when the woman who answered informed them they had found Mr Osborne’s prized pet.

It is not the first time Osborne’s cat has gone on the run.

Freya first joined the Chancellor’s family in 2009 when they were living in Notting Hill, west London, but disappeared after a few months.

Three years later Mr Osborne’s wife Frances received a phone call at their new Number 11 Downing Street home telling her Freya has been found living as a stray, and she had been traced thanks to a microchip containing their number.

The mysterious reappearance of the cat after so long sparked rumours that she was being used as a spy by a foreign power.

Last year one Conservative source told The Telegraph: “Some of us think the Chinese got her.

“She can get everywhere. You'd only have to bug her to find out half the Government's secrets.”
